Family Bytes
Preserving Heirloom Recipes
Every family recipe carries a family with it. We keep both — the dish, and the people who handed it down.
What this is
Family Bytes is a place to share family recipes. The twist is what comes attached to them: not just the dish, but the lineage behind it — where the family is from, the culture the food grew out of, and how the recipe found its way to whoever is cooking it now.
Recipes are usually the last piece of a family's history to survive. They outlast the photographs and the letters because people keep making them. Written down with the story intact, a recipe becomes the record.
The recipe
Ingredients and method, written the way it is actually cooked at home — including the measurements nobody ever wrote down.
The family
Who made it, and who taught them. Names, generations, and the branches of a family the dish travelled along.
The history
Where the recipe came from and what it meant there — the region, the culture, the holidays and ordinary Tuesdays it belonged to.
We are starting small. Right now this page is the whole site — recipe submissions and family pages come next.
